Bone Health

Dairy is a source of calcium, protein, phosphorous and magnesium, which are all essential for healthy bone growth and development. 

Nine to eighteen year olds need five servings of dairy per day. However 75% of teenage girls do not meet their calcium needs.

As 90% of adult bone is laid down before the age of seventeen, it is important for children and teeagers to look after their bones now.

       Teeth

The amounts of phosphorous and calcium in dairy products benefit the maintenance and development of healthy teeth.

A prominent protein in milk is casein. Casein is protective. It forms a thin film on the enamel surface which prevents loss of phosphate and calcium from the enamel when teeth are exposed to acids in the mouth.

Milk and cardiovascular disease

Many studies have linked milk and dairy consumption with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease.

Obesity

There is a common myth that people who consume dairy tend to be obese. Research has shown that people who consume milk and dairy foods are more likely to be slimmer than those who do not.

Type 2 diabetes

Studies suggest that regularly consuming dairy products can help reduce your risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes.

It is believed that this effect may be due to the combined effects of many beneficial nutrients found within dairy foods including magnesium and calcium. The fact that dairy foods have a low glycaemic index, which helps control blood sugar levels, may also help achieve this effect.

Cancer

A study of over 40,000 Norwegian women found that those who drank milk as children and continued to do so as adults, had a lower risk of developing breast cancer.

Benefits of dairy for your appearance

Hair

Hair needs protein to become strong and shiny. Milk contains plenty of protein and so is good for your hair.

Nails

Nails are made of the same components as hair and therefore require lots of protein. Soaking your nails in milk for as short a time as five minutes makes them stronger and glossy.

Skin

Milk contains many nutrients which are beneficial for your skin. It contains lactic acid, which can act as an exfoliant and enzymes to help smooth skin. Milk can prevent damage from environmental toxins as it has antioxidants. Milk contains amino acids which can help keep skin moisturized.
